Fatigue analysis of cast steel roller with embedded hard metal rings

In a first structural analysis the residual stresses, after cooling down in the manufacturing process, was calculated. The residual stress went into the fatigue analysis as the mean stress of a working cycle. The roller has two planes of symmetry, and the attached figure shows the distribution of residual stress for part of the model.

  • Cooling by 700 °C from a state of "no strength" in the steel i.e. yield stress close to 0
  • Materials: Steel and WC-Co
  • Viscoelastic creep simulation by a Norton type law
The amplitude of cyclic stress corresponding to hot rolling of steel wire, using the roller considered, was calculated in a second linear elastic structural analysis.
